Understanding Underhooks and Why They Matter

Understanding Underhooks and Why They Matter

Agape Fundamentals Series – Part 4
Welcome to the Agape Fundamentals Series, where we explore the timeless principles that make Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu effective. Rather than focusing on individual techniques, this series explains the concepts that every student—from white belt to black belt—can use to build a stronger understanding of the art.

If you’ve spent any time around Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you’ve probably heard your coach say it countless times.

“Get the underhook.”

At first, it can seem like just another instruction among dozens of others.

But after enough training, you begin to notice something interesting.

Many scrambles are won because of the underhook.

Many guard passes become easier because of the underhook.

Many escapes succeed because of the underhook.

That’s because an underhook isn’t simply a grip—it’s one of the most effective ways to control another person’s movement.

At Agape Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we teach students to look beyond individual techniques and understand the principles that make those techniques work. Few concepts demonstrate that better than the underhook.

The Underhook Creates Connection

One of the biggest challenges in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is staying connected to your training partner.

If there’s too much space, they move.

If they move freely, they escape.

An underhook helps eliminate that space.

Rather than trying to chase your opponent, you’re able to stay connected to them and influence where they can and cannot move.

That’s why experienced practitioners value underhooks so highly.

Control Beats Chasing

One of the most common mistakes beginners make is chasing submissions before they’ve established control.

Experienced practitioners tend to think differently.

Instead of asking, “How do I finish?”

They first ask, “How do I control?”

An underhook often becomes one of the answers to that question.

When movement becomes limited, opportunities naturally begin to appear.

Why Coaches Constantly Talk About Underhooks

New students sometimes wonder why coaches seem almost obsessed with underhooks.

The reason is simple.

The principles behind them appear almost everywhere.

Whether you’re standing, passing the guard, escaping side control, working from half guard, or maintaining top position, you’ll continually encounter situations where an underhook improves your position.

It’s one of those concepts that becomes more valuable the longer you train.

Understanding Inside Position

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often a battle for inside position.

Without realizing it, students spend much of every roll competing for who controls the space closest to the center of the body.

Winning that battle often improves balance, posture, movement, and control.

The underhook is one of the clearest examples of this principle.

Once students recognize how important inside position is, they begin seeing it throughout nearly every exchange.

Leverage Over Strength

One of the reasons Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is so effective is that it teaches students to rely on leverage rather than physical strength.

An underhook allows students to influence movement without needing to overpower their training partner.

That’s why you’ll often see experienced practitioners control larger opponents through positioning instead of force.

Good technique creates opportunities that strength alone cannot.

Learning to Recognize Opportunities

As students gain experience, something begins to change.

Instead of simply reacting to what their opponent is doing, they begin recognizing opportunities before they happen.

They start noticing when an underhook is available.

They recognize when they’ve lost one.

Most importantly, they begin understanding why that battle matters.

That’s the difference between memorizing techniques and developing true awareness on the mats.

More Than Teaching Techniques

At Agape Jiu-Jitsu Academy, our goal is to help students think differently about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Rather than collecting hundreds of unrelated techniques, we want students to understand the principles that connect them all.

When students recognize why an underhook is valuable, they begin seeing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a system instead of a collection of moves.

That understanding continues to grow with every class.

A Small Detail That Changes Everything

At first glance, an underhook may seem like a small detail.

In reality, it’s one of the building blocks of effective Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The more students understand connection, inside position, and controlling movement, the more every technique begins to make sense.

Like every principle in the Agape Fundamentals Series, it’s a lesson that becomes more valuable the longer you train.
