What to Expect at Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

What Should I Expect at My First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class?

Walking into your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class can feel exciting, intimidating, and a little overwhelming—all at the same time. If you’ve never trained before, you might wonder if you’ll know what to do, whether everyone will be more experienced than you, or if you’ll be expected to spar on day one.

The good news is that every experienced student once walked through the doors for the very first time. At Agape Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we strive to make every new student feel welcome, comfortable, and confident from the moment they step onto the mats. Whether you’re joining us from New Port Richey, Port Richey, Trinity, East Lake, Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor, or Hudson, your first class is designed to help you learn—not test you.

You’ll Be Welcomed by Friendly Coaches and Students

One of the first things you’ll notice is the positive atmosphere. Our coaches and students understand exactly what it’s like to be new because they’ve all been there before.

You’ll be introduced to your instructor, shown where everything is, and paired with experienced training partners who will help guide you through class.

No Experience Is Necessary

You do not need to know any martial arts before starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Every technique is taught step-by-step, with beginners in mind.

Your first class may include learning:

  • How to safely move on the ground.
  • Basic positions and terminology.
  • Simple escapes and control positions.
  • Fundamental self-defense concepts.

Everyone progresses at their own pace, and asking questions is always encouraged.

Class Usually Follows a Simple Structure

While every class is a little different, most sessions follow a similar format.

  • Warm-up and movement drills.
  • Technique instruction.
  • Partner drilling.
  • Optional positional training or live rolling, depending on experience level.

New students are never pressured into anything they’re uncomfortable with. Our instructors will help determine what is appropriate for your first class.

You’ll Learn by Drilling

Most of your first class will be spent drilling techniques with a partner. Drilling allows you to repeat movements slowly while receiving coaching and feedback.

The goal isn’t to win—it’s to understand proper mechanics and build confidence.

Will I Have to Spar?

Not necessarily.

Some beginners choose to watch live rolling during their first class, while others participate with close supervision. Your instructor will help decide what makes the most sense based on your comfort level and experience.

There is never pressure to do more than you’re ready for.

Expect to Be Challenged

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uses muscles and movement patterns that most people have never trained before.

It’s completely normal to feel:

  • Out of breath.
  • A little sore the next day.
  • Mentally challenged while learning something new.

Every class becomes easier as your body adapts and your confidence grows.

Wear Comfortable Athletic Clothing

For your first No-Gi class, simply wear:

  • An athletic t-shirt or rash guard.
  • Athletic shorts without zippers or pockets.
  • Flip-flops or sandals to wear off the mats.
  • A water bottle.

If you decide to continue training, we’ll gladly help you choose the proper gear.

Leave Your Ego at the Door

The biggest mistake new students make is worrying about performing well.

Your first class isn’t about proving yourself—it’s about learning.

Everyone taps. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone starts as a beginner.

The students who improve the fastest are those who stay humble, ask questions, and focus on getting just a little better each class.
