What to Expect at Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class
Estimated Reading Time: 6 Minutes
Trying something new can be intimidating, especially when it involves stepping onto a martial arts mat for the first time. At Agape Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we understand that nearly every new student walks through our doors with the same questions:
Will I fit in?
Will everyone be more experienced than me?
What if I’m not athletic?
The good news is that every black belt, every coach, and every experienced student started exactly where you are today.
Our goal is simple: make your first experience comfortable, welcoming, and enjoyable.
Before You Arrive
You don’t need expensive gear or any martial arts experience to begin.
For your first class, simply wear:
- Athletic shorts without zippers if possible
- A t-shirt or athletic shirt
- Flip-flops or sandals to wear off the mats
- A water bottle
Most importantly, bring an open mind.
There is absolutely no expectation that you’ll know anything about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before your first class.
You’ll Be Welcomed Like Family
One thing that separates Agape Jiu-Jitsu Academy from many gyms is our culture.
We believe the best training environment is one built on humility, encouragement, and respect.
When you arrive, you’ll meet one of our coaches who will introduce you to the academy, answer your questions, and explain how class works before training begins.
You’ll never be thrown into the middle of class wondering what to do.
You’ll Learn Before You Spar
One of the biggest misconceptions about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that your first class consists of fighting experienced students.
That isn’t how we teach.
Every class begins with instruction.
Our coaches break techniques into small, understandable pieces so beginners can build confidence one step at a time.
You’ll work with a partner while the coaches guide you through each movement at a comfortable pace.
Learning, not winning, is always the goal.
Do You Have to Spar?
Not on your first day.
If you’re completely new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we never pressure you into live sparring.
Many new students simply observe during that portion of class or participate only if they feel comfortable and the coach believes they’re ready.
Your confidence is far more important than rushing the process.
Everyone Was Once a Beginner
It’s easy to look around the room and think everyone knows what they’re doing.
The truth is every student remembers their first day.
Our experienced students understand exactly how you feel because they’ve been there themselves.
One of the things we’re most proud of at Agape is how welcoming our members are to new students.
Questions are encouraged. Mistakes are expected. Progress happens one class at a time.
What Will You Learn?
Your first few weeks focus on the fundamentals that create long-term success.
You’ll begin learning:
- Proper movement
- Basic positions
- Escapes
- Control
- Simple submissions
- Safety on the mats
These foundational skills become the building blocks for everything you’ll learn later.
You Don’t Need to Be in Shape First
One of the most common reasons people delay starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is believing they need to “get in shape first.”
The reality is that training is what helps you get into shape.
Students of all ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds begin training every year.
Don’t wait until you feel ready. Start where you are.
Why Agape Is Different
At Agape Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we believe Jiu-Jitsu is about much more than learning submissions.
Our academy focuses on:
- Building confidence
- Developing discipline
- Learning humility
- Serving others
- Creating lifelong friendships
- Becoming the best version of yourself
Technique matters. Character matters even more.
That philosophy influences every class we teach.
Ready to Take the First Step?
The hardest part of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often walking through the door for the first time.
After that, you’ll quickly realize you’re surrounded by people who want to help you succeed.
Whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, gain confidence, learn self-defense, or simply become part of a positive community, we’d love to meet you.
