Why Following Directions Is One of the First Skills We Teach
When parents think about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, they often picture takedowns, submissions, and self-defense techniques. While those skills certainly become part of a child’s journey, our Little Ninjas program begins with something even more important—learning to follow directions.
Children between the ages of four and seven are still developing their ability to listen, focus, and process instructions. At Agape Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we believe these life skills create the foundation for success not only in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but also at home, in school, and throughout life.
Led by Coach Annmarie, Owner and Head Little Ninjas Instructor, with Coach Jacob, Owner and Head Adult Instructor, assisting during class, every lesson is designed to help children become better listeners while having fun and building confidence.
Listening Is a Skill That Must Be Practiced
Young children aren’t born knowing how to pay attention for an entire class. Like any other skill, listening improves through consistent practice.
Every Little Ninjas class provides opportunities for children to stop, watch, listen, and then perform a task. Over time, those small moments help children become more patient, attentive, and confident in following instructions.
Learning One Step at a Time
Complex instructions can be overwhelming for young children. That’s why we break every lesson into simple, manageable steps.
Children learn to focus on one instruction at a time before moving on to the next. This approach builds confidence while reducing frustration and helping every student experience success.
Why Following Directions Matters Beyond the Mats
The ability to follow directions is valuable in almost every part of a child’s life. Parents often tell us they notice improvements in how their children listen at home, follow instructions in school, and participate in other activities.
While every child develops differently, consistently practicing these skills in a structured environment often helps reinforce positive habits.
Building Respect Through Structure
Following directions is also an important way children learn respect. Students discover that listening to their instructors helps keep everyone safe while creating an environment where every child can learn together.
Simple routines like lining up, waiting for instructions, and taking turns teach patience, self-control, and respect for others.
Creating Better Training Partners
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is learned with training partners. As children improve their listening skills, they also become better teammates.
They learn to wait their turn, cooperate with classmates, and help create a positive atmosphere where everyone enjoys learning together.
Confidence Grows with Every Success
Each time a child successfully follows an instruction, remembers a drill, or completes an activity, they experience a small success.
Those successes build confidence over time and encourage children to continue challenging themselves both on and off the mats.
Life Skills First, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Second
At Agape Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we believe that teaching life skills is just as important as teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques—especially for children ages 4–7.
As our Little Ninjas develop confidence, focus, discipline, and the ability to follow directions, they’re building a foundation that prepares them for success in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and in life.
